How to stop doomscrolling and start reading your Bible

A determined red heart mascot holds an open Bible. The headline says: Phone down. Bible up.

Short answer

Name why you scroll. Pause before your worst app. Read a few verses. Lean on Jesus

Doomscrolling means reading bad news again and again.
It leaves us tired, tense, and sad.
Most of us have done it.

This guide is honest and practical.
It also has grace.
We are weak, and God knows it.

Be honest about the pull

Willpower alone often fails.
Many apps are built to hold our eyes.
That is not an excuse.
It is a fact to plan around.

Do not call yourself a bad Christian for this.
Your standing with God rests on Jesus.
Your phone habit does not change that.

Ask why you scroll

Most of us scroll for a reason.

  • We feel anxious.
  • We feel bored.
  • We feel lonely.
  • We want to avoid a hard task.

Name the reason in a short prayer.
"Lord, I am scared. Help me."
God hears weak people.

Make scrolling a little harder

Small walls help.

  • Move the worst apps off your first screen.
  • Turn off alerts.
  • Charge your phone across the room at night.
  • Set a time limit for news and social apps.

Spiritualrot is a free app.
It can lock apps until you read a few verses.
It is a tool, like an alarm clock.
A lock cannot change your heart.
God does that.
But a lock can give you a pause.

Make the Bible easy to open

Put a Bible where your phone usually sits.
Or keep a Bible app on your first screen.
Remove anything that makes reading hard.

Start small.

  • Read three to five verses.
  • Read one short Psalm.
  • Read out loud if you lose focus.
  • Stop when the time is up.

A small habit that lasts beats a big one that dies.

Let God's Word light the way

News shows us what is wrong.
The Bible tells us who God is.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105, ESV)

A lamp shows the next step.
It does not show the whole road.
That is enough for today.

Bring your worry to Jesus

Doomscrolling often grows from fear.
Jesus knows our fear.
He invites tired and afraid people to come to him:

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30, ESV)

"Lowly" means humble.
A yoke is a wooden bar that joins two oxen.
Jesus invites us to walk with him.
He carries the weight.
Notice his heart.
He is gentle and humble.
He is not a hard master.

After you read, pray in plain words.
"Jesus, I am tired. Hold me today."
That is a real prayer.

When you fail

You may fall back into old habits.
We are weak, and we still fall short.
Grace is not a reason to stop trying.

If you sinned, tell God the truth.
Jesus forgives.
Then use your walls again tomorrow.

Reading the Bible does not buy forgiveness.
Jesus already did that.
We read because he is good, and we need him.

A simple plan for this week

  1. Pick one app that drains you most.
  2. Add a pause before you open it.
  3. Read three verses first.
  4. Pray one sentence.
  5. Tell a friend what you are trying.

Spiritualrot is a free app.
It can lock apps until you read a few verses.
Try it as one small tool.
Then lean on Jesus, who is gentle and strong to save.
