Why do I feel guilty for not reading my Bible?

A sad red heart mascot hugs a Bible. The headline says: Guilty for skipping your Bible?

Short answer

In Christ there is no condemnation. Begin again today with a short prayer

Many Christians feel this guilt.
You may feel it right now.
Let us look at what the Bible says about it.

Start with Jesus

If you trust Jesus, your reading record does not set your standing.
Jesus lived the life we cannot live.
He died for our sins.
He rose again.
We trust him, and he saves.
That is why Paul can write this:

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1, ESV)

No condemnation means no guilty verdict.
Reading the Bible does not buy forgiveness.
Jesus did that at the cross.
Skipping a day does not undo it.

Not sure you trust Jesus yet?
He died for sinners and rose again.
Turn to him and trust him.
He welcomes you.

Where the guilty feeling may come from

Not all guilt is the same.
Here are a few common sources.

  • A church or home that stressed rules over Jesus.
  • Comparing yourself to other Christians.
  • A busy, tired life.
  • A mind that finds it hard to focus.
  • A habit of neglecting God's Word.

Look at each one with honesty.
Some of these are not sin at all.
They are just the weight of life.

When the guilt points to a real need

Sometimes the feeling is true.
We are weak, and we drift.
God gave us his Word because we need it.
It is like food for the soul.

If you have drifted, come back.
Here is the promise for those in Christ:

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9, ESV)

Confess means to agree with God about your sin.
Confessing does not buy forgiveness.
Jesus paid for it.
So God is faithful and just to forgive.
Look to Jesus, not at yourself.

Think of it like an alarm clock.
It can wake you up for a moment.
It cannot make you right with God.
Jesus has already done that.

Come tired

Some people stop reading when they feel tired or far away.
Jesus speaks to those people.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28, ESV)

He does not say, "Fix yourself first."
He says, "Come to me."

Easy ways to begin again

Start very small.

  • Read three verses.
  • Read one Psalm.
  • Say one short prayer, in your own words.
  • Pick a time that fits your life.
  • Read out loud if your mind wanders.

Do not try to catch up on missed days.
There is nothing to make up.
Just open the Bible today.

Why we read at all

We read to know Jesus better.
We read to hear God speak.
We do not read to win his love.
His love is already given to those in Christ.

If you miss a day, begin again the next.
God is patient with weak people.

One more step

Tell a friend you want to read more.
Ask them to pray for you.
Christians were meant to walk together.
