Is it a sin to scroll on your phone?

A worried red heart mascot holds a glowing phone. The headline says: Is scrolling a sin?

Short answer

Not by itself. A phone is a tool. Ask if it helps you. Then come to Jesus

Scrolling is not a sin by itself.
A phone is a tool.
A tool can be used well or badly.

The Bible has no verse about phones.
But it gives us wisdom for how we spend our days.
Wisdom asks better questions than "Is this a sin?"

Allowed is not the same as helpful

Some in Corinth said, "All things are lawful."
Paul answered them.
He wrote this about food and what to eat:

"All things are lawful," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful," but not all things build up. (1 Corinthians 10:23, ESV)

"Lawful" means allowed.
We can use the same wisdom for phones.
So Paul asks two questions.
Is it helpful?
Does it build up?

Scrolling may be allowed and still not help you.
In 1 Corinthians 6:12, Paul adds one more worry.
He wrote about the body.
We can use it here:

"All things are lawful for me," but I will not be dominated by anything. (1 Corinthians 6:12, ESV)

When scrolling does become sin

Scrolling is sin when the heart wants what is sinful.
It is also sin when it rules us.
Here are some plain examples.

  • Looking at lust.
  • Feeding envy.
  • Joining gossip or cruel talk.
  • Hiding from people God asked you to love.
  • Letting it rule you.
  • Skipping the work or people God gave you.

That is sin, and sin is serious.
But Jesus came for sinners.
When we turn to him, he forgives.

Use your time well

Paul tells us to use our time well:

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. (Ephesians 5:15-16, ESV)

This does not mean every minute must be busy.
God made rest, and rest is good.
The question is simple.
Is this rest, or am I hiding?

A tool that can help

Spiritualrot is a free app.
It can lock apps until you read a few verses.
It works like an alarm clock.
An alarm wakes you up, but it does not save you.
Jesus saves.
The app only gives you a pause.

Come to Jesus tired

Many people scroll when they feel tired, lonely, or sad.
We are weak, and God knows it.

For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust. (Psalm 103:14, ESV)

Jesus does not wait for us to feel strong.
He says this:

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28, ESV)

Jesus gives rest for the soul.
Rest is a gift he gives.
It is not a prize for good behavior.

Wise questions to ask

Ask these when you pick up your phone.

  • Is this helpful?
  • Does this build me up?
  • Is this ruling me?
  • What am I running from?
  • Who needs my love today?

Do not use these as a shame test.
Use them as a light.
If you fail, say so to God and keep going.
There is grace for the next hour too.

What to do next

Pick one change today.
Maybe you read three verses before your first app.
Maybe you pray one sentence when you feel the pull.
Small steps are fine.

Then rest in Jesus, who does the saving.
