Why does a note appear above some Bible verses?

Short answer

Two short passages were added to the Bible later, and a note names that right above them

Where you see it

Open the Bible tab and read Mark 16 or John 7 through 8. Right above two short passages, you see a small note with an info icon.

What it says

Above Mark 16:9, the note says: "This ending was added later." The oldest copies of Mark's Gospel end at verse 8. Verses 9 to 20 were added later, so read them together with the rest of Scripture, and never use them alone to build a teaching.

Above John 7:53, the note says: "This story was added later." The oldest copies of John's Gospel do not have this story. Later copies add it, and not always in the same place.

Why does it say that?

Tap "Why?" under the note. It names the oldest known copies of the New Testament that do not have that passage.

Does the app remove the verses?

No. Both passages stay in the Bible, in the same place, with the same verse numbers. The note only sits above them so you know what the oldest copies say.
