How does Study Play work?

What is Study Play?

It is the Read step of "Read and pray". While you read, the top of the screen says "GUIDED STUDY".

Each lesson is 9 short cards. The counter at the top shows which card you are on.

What are the cards?

They go in this order:

1. "OPENING PRAYER": a short prayer to start
2. "OBSERVATION": a card that asks "What does it say?"
3. The passage: its reference, a short note on the setting, and the Bible text
4. A question about what the passage says, with its answer under "WHAT THE PASSAGE SHOWS"
5. "INTERPRETATION": a card that asks "What does it mean?"
6. A question about what the passage means, with its answer under "WHAT THE PASSAGE SHOWS"
7. "MINI QUIZ": choose the answer that matches the passage
8. "APPLICATION": a card that asks "What do I do now?"
9. "Apply what you read": a practical response to consider

Tap "Continue" to go to the next card. On the last card, tap "Finish reading".

The last card gives an application of the passage. It does not add another guided prayer. The separate Pray step remains available before or after reading.

How does the quiz work?

1. Pick the answer that matches the passage
2. Right? You see "Correct" and a short note that explains what the passage means. Tap "Continue"
3. Wrong? You see "Try again". Tap "Try again" and pick another

"Continue" stays grayed out until you pick the right answer.

When do I get XP?

During an available reading time, finish the reading, then tap "Claim XP". The quiz itself does not give or take XP.

If you save a reading after its reward time ends, your place in a path you are reading again can still move forward. That reading gives no XP. Reading outside a reward time gives no XP either.

This is the XP for reading. After you also finish Pray, you may see optional Go deeper and About {Book} pages. About appears only when that book has an introduction, and stays readable after its XP is claimed. Some introductions have no XP claim. Go deeper varies with the passage. Can I go back?

Yes. Tap the back arrow at the top to see an earlier card. Close it halfway and your place is saved.

Open a finished reading from Today to read that same passage again. Opening a passage directly in the Bible starts the study for that passage.
